Neath Port Talbot held a Learning Festival, for NIACE’s Adult Learners’ Week, on Saturday 17 May in Aberavon Shopping Centre. Fun activities and information and advice on learning and employment opportunities made the day a huge success with many people joining in despite Cardiff playing in the F.A. Cup Final on the same day.

The event covered several themes including Cultural Diversity, the Arts, Health & Well Being and Information Technology. A Nintendo Wii proved to be a big draw for people and, along with the fun element, it tested people’s dexterity and showed how it could be used as a tool for fitness.

Participants taking part in all activities were awarded with a T-shirt saying ‘Wii did it for Adult Learners’ Week’. Indian dancers and a Caribbean Steel Pan band provided interactive performances and music that was enjoyed by staff and public alike.

The new Mayor of Neath Port Talbot, Councillor Malcolm Gunter, and the Mayoress, attended trying many of the activities available and talking to staff from the cross-sector organisations supporting the event. Osprey star, Richard Hubbard, also got in on the act having his BMI tested by the Advantage team from Celtic Leisure who were promoting health and fitness.

Other organisations providing information and advice on the day included NPT Adult Guidance Service, the Older Persons’ Strategy, STRIDES, NPT for Voluntary Services, NPT College, NPT Lifelong Learning Service, NPT Library Services and the Enterprise Learning by Doing Project who donated prizes on the day.

Cheryl Nesbitt, from the New Learning Network, said “The whole day was a great success and a fun, informal way to show people how easy it is to get involved with learning activities and increase their awareness of health and well-being. Nearly 90% of the people we talked to today asked to be contacted with more information on Adult Education courses.

“Alison Richards, Adult Guidance Officer, had numerous requests for more information on learning and employment. People were really impressed when they realised the many facilities and opportunities that are readily available to them throughout Neath Port Talbot.

“We’re so pleased with the results and feedback from the people that we will try and run regular awareness raising activities”
