Using Email via your ISP

Unless you are using specific e-mail software supplied by your ISP, it's likely that you will be using Outlook Express as your e-mail software as it comes ready installed with the Windows operating system.

A common mistake made by people new to e-mail is that they think that they have to be online to write their essages. The majority of people use the Internet by dialling up their ISP using a modem - and even though their ISP may offer their services for free, you will still be charged for using the telephone line as if it was a regular phone call. So, writing your messages while online will unnecessarily cost money.

The first thing to do then - before you send a single message - is to configure Outlook Express so that when you click the Send button, instead of trying to send your message, it places it in the Outbox. This way you can write message after message and "queue" them up in the Outbox without being connected to the Internet. Then, when you have written them all, connect to the Internet and click the Send/Receive button which will then send all the messages in the Outbox in one go and then check for any messages waiting to be downloaded to your computer.

How do I do that?

Sound complicated? Don't worry, it's easy. Open Outlook Express and choose Tools from the Menu Bar at the very top of the screen and then select Options from the drop-down menu that appears. A tabbed window will appear, usually with the General tab at the front, as illustrated below. If there is a tick next to "Send and receive messages at startup" click on the tick to make it disappear. Now select the Send tab and make sure there is no tick next to "Send messages immediately". Click on OK and that's it.
